In daily life, you might have encountered the need to track changes in documents. Perhaps you've ever saved multiple versions of a document with filenames like "report_v1.doc", "report_final.doc", or "report_final_v2_actually_final.doc". Congratulations—you've unknowingly practiced version control! Version Control, also known as Version Control System (VCS), is essentially a systematic approach to tracking changes in files over time, enabling you to switch between different versions freely and allowing multiple people to collaborate on the same document.
In the context of software development, version control becomes critically important. Modern software projects typically contain thousands to millions of lines of code, maintained by dozens or even hundreds of developers. Without a version control system, software development would descend into chaos: Who changed what? Why was this changed? How do we recover if new features break existing code? What if someone accidentally deletes important code? These challenges would become bottlenecks that constrain team efficiency and project quality without systematic solutions.
To trace the history of version control, we must go back to the earliest days of software development. In the 1960s and early 1970s, software development lacked the mature engineering practices we have today. Programmers managed code versions in rather primitive ways: periodically copying entire project directories to other locations. This approach was commonly called the "Breadcrumb Method" or "SCCS Method" because the Source Code Control System (SCCS), developed by AT&T Bell Labs in 1972, was based on this backup philosophy.
SCCS worked quite simply: it stored only the differences (diffs) between versions of a file, rather than complete copies of each version. Users could retrieve any historical version, but the editing process was serial—only one person could edit a file at a time. While this design solved basic version tracking problems, its limitations became increasingly apparent as software development scaled up.
In 1985, the Revision Control System (RCS) was developed by Professor Dick Grune at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. RCS was an improved version of SCCS, taking the differential storage approach to its extreme—each file had exactly one RCS archive file (typically named `file,v`), which contained the complete version history and all change information for that file. An important innovation of RCS was its file locking mechanism: only the lock holder could edit the file, while others could only read during that period.
RCS represented the pinnacle of Local Version Control Systems (LVCS). This type of system stores all version information on the local computer, requiring no network connection. It solved the problem of individual developers managing their own project histories, but completely failed to support team collaboration. You couldn't see what team members were changing, nor could you safely merge different people's work.
In 1986, the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) was born—a significant leap in version control history. CVS was designed by Dick Grune and further developed and maintained by Carl Fogel and others. CVS's core innovation was its introduction of the client-server architecture: a central server hosted all files' current versions and historical records, while developers' workstations only needed to store working copies of files they were currently working on.
This architecture brought revolutionary changes: multiple developers could work on the same project simultaneously, and everyone's modifications could eventually be merged into the central repository. CVS saved storage space by recording file-level changes (rather than complete file copies) and helped teams organize development work through branching and tagging features. It quickly became the most popular version control system in the open-source community, and in the early 2000s, nearly all major open-source projects used CVS.
However, CVS had some inherent design flaws. The most notable issue was the lack of atomicity—many CVS operations (such as commits) were not truly atomic, meaning that in cases of network failure or other interruptions, the repository could be left in an inconsistent state. Additionally, CVS's branching functionality was quite clumsy; creating branches was easy but merging branches was often risky, causing many teams to avoid branching altogether and develop on the trunk instead, leading to what's known as "Terror of the Trunk".
In 2000, the Apache Subversion (SVN) project was officially launched, aiming to solve CVS's various problems and provide more reliable version control capabilities. SVN was sponsored by CollabNet and later contributed to the Apache Software Foundation as a top-level project. SVN retained CVS's client-server model and core concepts but made numerous improvements.
SVN's most important improvements included: True atomic commits—each commit either completely succeeds or completely fails, eliminating the risk of leaving the repository in an inconsistent state; Directory version control—in CVS, directories weren't versioned, and adding or removing empty directories wasn't tracked, while SVN completely tracked changes to the directory tree; Efficient storage—SVN uses binary diff algorithms to efficiently store various file types. SVN quickly replaced CVS as the version control system of choice in enterprise environments and remained the industry standard for over a decade.
