This is a critical moment in the family's journey: they are relocating from an old residential building in Chaoyang District, Beijing, to a newly constructed apartment complex on the eastern side of the city.
"What do these boxes contain, Dad?" Li Mingxuan asked, lifting a dusty cardboard box and curiously examining its contents.
Li Jianguo walked over to take a look. Inside were yellowed photo albums, grain ration tickets, a few old photographs, and a small enameled teacup. He was silent for a moment before speaking slowly:
"These belonged to your grandfather. They lived in a hutong back then, with the whole family crammed into a 20-square-meter room. Later, as Beijing expanded, the hutongs were demolished and high-rises were built. Our family, spanning three generations, has witnessed the transformation of the city firsthand."
This ordinary Chinese family's moving story reflects a grand proposition: What is a city? Why do cities exist? How have they shaped each of our lives?
In the months that followed, the Li family gradually adapted to their new home: their son would commute across half the city by subway to school, his wife would make new friends in the community park, and Li Jianguo would continue driving his yellow taxi through this megacity of over 20 million permanent residents. Their story is merely a microcosm of the wave of urbanization sweeping across China and the entire world.

*The Birth of Cities: From Settlements to Civilizations*
When we talk about "cities" today, it seems like a self-evident existence. We live in cities, work in cities, shop, seek medical care, and socialize in cities. The city is like the air we breathe—a backdrop to our lives, an environment we've come to take for granted. However, if we turn back the clock ten thousand years, we would find that humans at that time had no concept of "cities."
Around 9500 to 8000 BCE, humanity was in a critical phase of the Neolithic Revolution. Before this period, Homo sapiens had lived on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years, primarily as hunter-gatherers, following water and grass, never staying in one place. Around this time, the Agricultural Revolution began to take root in the "Fertile Crescent" of the Middle East. Humans started cultivating wheat and barley, domesticating goats and sheep, and transitioning from nomadic to settled lifestyles.
The Agricultural Revolution created the possibility for cities to be born. When humans no longer required all members to be engaged in food production, some people could be freed from agriculture to engage in handicrafts, commerce, religion, art, and other activities. This deepening of social division of labor laid the economic foundation for the emergence of cities.
One of the earliest cities in human history was Ur, located in present-day Iraq. Archaeologists have discovered that this city had complex urban planning around 4000 BCE: organized streets, temple complexes, canal systems, and even primitive drainage facilities. The emergence of Ur marked a crucial step for humanity in transitioning from primitive tribal society to complex social organizational forms.
While Ur flourished, early urban civilizations emerged in succession: Memphis and Thebes in the Nile Valley, Babylon in the Tigris-Euphrates region, Mohenjo-daro in the Indus Valley, and the Erlitou site in the Yellow River Valley. These cities were not merely population centers but also hubs of power, religion, and economy. The emergence of cities is regarded by many historians as one of the most important inventions of human civilization.
Let's use a diagram to understand the logic behind the origin of cities:

*Urban Evolution: A History of Human Society's Development*
The form of cities is not static. With technological progress, economic development, and changes in social structure, the appearance of cities has continuously evolved. From the Greek city-states (Polis) to the megacities of the Roman Empire, from medieval feudal castles to industrial cities that rose during the Industrial Revolution, to today's information-based metropolises—each major transformation of cities has profoundly changed human lifestyles.
*Ancient Cities: Symbols of Power and Centers of Religion*
The characteristic feature of ancient cities was their function as centers of political power and religious worship. Take ancient Rome as an example. During the reign of Emperor Trajan in 117 CE, the city had a permanent population of approximately 1 to 1.5 million, making it one of the largest cities in the world at that time. The layout of Rome reflected a strong hierarchical order: the Forum Romanum at the city's center served as the hub of political activity, the towering Pantheon enshrined the Roman gods, and the aqueducts encircling the city showcased the empire's formidable engineering prowess.
On the other side of the ancient world, Chinese civilization also developed unique urban forms. From the Zhou Dynasty's emphasis on "harmony between man and nature" in city site selection, to the rigorous grid layout of Han Dynasty Chang'an, and the grand ambition displayed by Tang Dynasty Chang'an—with a population exceeding one million, it was the largest capital city in the world at that time. Ancient Chinese cities generally followed the ritual planning principles of "ancestral temples on the left, altars on the right, facing the south with markets behind," clearly delineating functional areas such as ancestral worship, market trade, and residential zones.
It is worth noting that the population density of ancient cities was far lower than that of modern cities. Taking cities during the Roman Empire as an example, despite their large population, the lack of modern vertical construction technology forced cities to ex
