Chapter 1: 当世界说再见——冷战的诞生 | When the World Said Goodbye: The Birth of the Cold War
America and Britain celebrated victory in Europe on May 8, 1945. In Moscow, church bells rang, crowds cheered, and champagne flowed. But just six weeks later, on July 17, 1945, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, American President Harry Truman, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin met at the Potsdam Conference near Berlin to discuss the postwar world order. The atmosphere was noticeably different from the wartime conferences. Something had shifted between these "allies" — a subtle but unmistakable tension that would soon explode into the defining conflict of the 20th century.
To understand why the Cold War erupted so quickly after WWII, we need to realize that Americans, British, and Soviets were never really friends. They were simply forced together by a common enemy — Nazi Germany.
Then came the shocking Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Nazi Germany and Soviet Union in August 1939. Stalin and Hitler, two brutal dictators, shook hands and promised not to attack each other. Britain and France were stunned — they had been negotiating with the Soviets to form an alliance against Germany, but Moscow suddenly turned toward Berlin.
But just two years later, on June 22, 1941, Hitler tore up the pact and launched Operation Barbarossa — the largest military invasion in human history. 3.6 million German soldiers surged into Soviet territory, advancing toward Moscow and Leningrad.
Now Stalin was furious.
Four days after the Soviet-German war began, President Franklin Roosevelt told his Secretary of State Cordell Hull something revealing: "If Germany is stronger than Russia, we help Russia; if Russia is stronger than Germany, we help Germany. But if they're about equal, we sit back and watch them destroy each other."
This was classic American pragmatism. Ideology didn't matter — only interests did.
But plans changed quickly. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, dragging America into World War II. Suddenly, the USSR looked like a valuable ally — they had troops, they could help fight Germany and Japan, and they were already bleeding from fighting the Nazis.
Thus the strangest political alliance in history was born: Capitalist America + Constitutional Monarchy Britain + Communist USSR = Anti-Fascist Coalition. In today's terms, it's like making Coca-Cola, Moutai, and Tsingtao Beer work together to take down a counterfeit liquor operation. They could cooperate on the surface, but nobody really liked each other.
When discussing Allied cooperation during WWII, we must mention the conferences held by the "Big Three." The most important was the Yalta Conference.
From February 4-11, 1945, in Yalta, a scenic resort on the Crimean Peninsula, three elderly men (average age over 65) — Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin — gathered at the luxurious Livadia Palace to decide the postwar world order.
This conference was crucial because it established the foundation of the "Yalta System." In simple terms, the Yalta System was the postwar international order arranged by America, the Soviet Union, and Britain. The key points included:
First, the UN Security Council. The Big Three agreed to establish a new international organization — the United Nations — to mediate disputes and prevent future world wars. They designed a "great power consensus" mechanism, giving the five permanent Security Council members (China, USA, USSR, UK, France) veto power. This was meant to create balance between great powers but also planted seeds for future deadlocks.
Second, the division of postwar Germany. The Big Three agreed to divide defeated Germany into four zones, occupied by America, the Soviet Union, Britain, and France. Berlin, though located in the Soviet zone, would also be divided into four sectors. This seemingly fair arrangement later became one of the triggers for the Cold War.
Third, Soviet interests in Asia. Stalin promised Roosevelt and Churchill that the USSR would join the war against Japan. In exchange, the Soviets would recover southern Sakhalin, gain the Kuril Islands, and obtain special rights in China's Manchuria.
Fourth, Eastern Europe's "sphere of influence." This was the most sensitive topic. Roosevelt and Churchill tried to get Stalin to promise "free elections" in Eastern Europe. But Stalin gave only vague assurances. In practice, the Red Army already controlled Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and other Eastern European countries. These nations became Soviet satellites — nominally independent but actually taking orders from Moscow.
Less than three months after Yalta, on April 12, 1945, Roosevelt suddenly died. His Vice President Harry Truman took over. The new president lacked Roosevelt's personal charm and political skills, and approached Stalin with more directness and force.
Less than a month later, on May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered and the European war ended. The Yalta agreements were barely dry, and American-Soviet tensions were already emerging.
Europe in 1945 was a landscape of ruins and devastation. Allied cooperation seemed to continue, but cracks were already appearing.
The first thing that annoyed Americans was the Poland problem. According to Yalta, Poland should have a pro-Western rather than pro-Soviet government. But Stalin had other ideas — the Red Army occupied Poland, so why would he let Poles elect a government that might oppose the Soviet Union?
By the end of 1945, Poland had established a "Provisional Government of National Unity" that sounded democratic but was entirely communist. The Polish democrats who had fled to London got no seats. Americans and British protested, but the deed was done — Soviets had a firm grip on Poland.
Meanwhile, in Asia, after Japan's su
