The Storm That Started Everything
Imagine being a writer where all the inspiration for your stories must come from your own mind—those magical plotlines, vivid characters, and thrilling scenes all slowly brewing and fermenting inside that little head of yours, eventually flowing onto paper as words.
That summer of 1816, a young British girl named Mary Shelley faced exactly this moment.
That year, Mary was only eighteen years old. Just like you, that age might seem quite young. But at that age, she had already experienced the ups and downs of life—her beloved mother had passed away shortly after giving birth to her, and her father was a famous writer and philosopher. Perhaps it was this special upbringing that made Mary more sensitive than other children from a young age, and more inclined to think about profound questions about life, death, and human nature.
That summer, Mary traveled with her poet husband Percy Shelley to an ancient castle by Lake Geneva in Switzerland for vacation. Among their companions were several talented young people, including another famous poet, Lord Byron.
One day, Lord Byron proposed a game—everyone would write a ghost story, and whoever wrote the scariest one would win. This suggestion immediately sparked everyone's interest, and everyone was eager to try.
But that night, as Mary lay in bed racking her brain, she simply couldn't come up with a good story. She tossed and turned, her mind completely blank. Outside, a violent storm was raging against the ancient castle, lightning tearing through the sky, thunder rumbling loudly.
Just as Mary was about to give up, a wonderful idea suddenly flashed into her mind:
"What if a scientist could assemble a living creature from various parts of corpses, and then give it life through his wisdom and the power of electricity... what kind of story would that be?"
The moment this idea appeared, Mary couldn't sleep anymore. She immediately got up, lit a candle, and began writing furiously.
And so, the world's first true science fiction novel, *Frankenstein*, was born.
Later, Mary wrote in her memoirs: "I saw the first ghostly visions—a pale-faced scholar kneeling beside his hideous creation; I saw a room of workings and levers, the operated machine flashing with dim sparks..."
What exactly does this story, born in the midst of a storm, tell? And how can it continue to fascinate and make us reflect across more than two hundred years?
Let's step into the world of *Frankenstein* together and find the answers!
The Birth of a Mad Scientist
The male protagonist of the story is named Victor Frankenstein, born into a wealthy and happy family in Geneva, Switzerland.
From childhood, Victor was a child with an extremely strong curiosity. Unlike other children who were content with playing and games, he spent all his time in his father's library, eagerly devouring all kinds of scientific books.
One day, young Victor read a strange story in an ancient book: an ancient alchemist had discovered a powder that could turn metals into gold—the Philosopher's Stone. Even more miraculously, this alchemist had used this powder and something called the "Philosopher's Stone" to create a magical liquid—the "Elixir of Life."
Young Victor's eyes lit up as he read. He thought: If I could find this magical power, could I unlock the secrets of life? Could I help humanity defeat disease and death?
With this dream, Victor went to university when he grew up and began studying the most cutting-edge science of that era—chemistry and electricity. In those days, scientists had just discovered a miraculous phenomenon: when electricity passed through a frog's leg, the leg would actually twitch! As if electricity could give lifeless things life!
Victor became obsessed with this. He spent day and night in the laboratory, conducting experiment after experiment. He wanted to find a way to use the power of electricity to reawaken dead life.
After years of research, Victor finally succeeded! He invented a huge machine that could generate powerful electric currents. Then, on a stormy night, he secretly slipped into the morgue...
Victor assembled a giant creature from various parts of corpses—heads, arms, legs, torso. He placed this assembled body in the center of the laboratory, then started the machine...
A bolt of lightning streaked across the sky, and a powerful current surged into that body!
That body abruptly opened its eyes—it was alive!
Victor was overjoyed; he couldn't wait to see his masterpiece. However, when he lit a candle and got close enough to see what the creature looked like... he was terrified out of his wits!
The creature's skin was terrifyingly pale, as if wrapped in pale linen. Its eyes were yellow, like two dim lamps. Most terrifying of all was its face—that face assembled from different corpses—looked so deformed, so ugly!
Victor let out a terrified scream, stumbled out of the laboratory, and dared not look back.
The Abandoned Monster
Victor ran away.
He ran so fast, so desperately, that he didn't even close the laboratory door properly. He returned to his apartment, locked the door, covered his head with a blanket, and trembled all over. He kept telling himself: This isn't real, this is just a nightmare...
But this wasn't a nightmare.
The creature that had just gained life lay alone in the dark laboratory. It slowly opened its eyes and curiously打量着这个世界——this newly awakened being took in the wonder of the world around it. Its first action was to reach out and touch—it felt the temperature of the air for the first time, felt its own heartbeat for the first time.
It didn't know who it was, where it came from, or even what it was. It knew only one thing: it needed to survive.
The creature struggled to crawl out of the laboratory and into the outside world. Outside was a cold night, wind howling, snowflakes fluttering down. The creature had never felt cold before, and it was terrifie
