The Family as a Foundation: Understanding the Basic Structure of Family Relationships
The Meaning of Home
Every one of us has a home. Whether your home is big or small, bustling or quiet, located in a city high-rise or a countryside cottage, home is the first place you ever stayed in this world. When you opened your eyes for the first time, the first thing you saw was the ceiling of your home; when you took your first steps, it was the floor of your home beneath your feet; and when you learned to speak your first words, they were most likely "Papa," "Mama," or "Grandpa," "Grandma." Home is the most important starting point in your life.
But have you ever wondered, why do we humans need families? Why don't we grow up alone, instead living with our parents and grandparents? This question may seem simple, but there's profound scientific reasoning behind it. In this chapter, we will embark on an exploration together to discover the secrets of families and understand why they are so crucial to your growth.
What is a Family? Starting from the Basic Unit of Society
In the dictionaries of sociology and psychology, the word "family" carries rich meaning. Simply put, a family is composed of two or more people who are connected through marriage, blood relations, adoption, or caregiving relationships, living together and influencing each other. This definition sounds a bit complicated, so let's break it down together.
First, a family is composed of a group of people. These people are not strangers who gathered randomly, but are connected through specific relational bonds. These bonds might be blood relationships, such as the connections between you and your parents and grandparents; they could also be marriage relationships, like how your father and mother became a family through marriage; or they might be adoption relationships or caregiving relationships, such as adoptive parents caring for children, or in some cases, grandparents taking on the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren.
Why do we need these bonds? Because these relationships help humans accomplish something extremely important—reproduction and rearing. Unlike some animals in nature, human children cannot live independently for a long time after birth. A foal can stand and walk just a few hours after being born, but human babies need as long as ten or even twenty years to become fully independent. During this time, children need care, protection, and education from adults. This is why families exist—they provide a safe environment where adults can care for children, where children can grow up healthy, learn various skills, and eventually become independent individuals.
Psychologists use Ecological Systems Theory to describe the importance of families to children's development. This theory was proposed by American psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner in the 1970s and remains one of the most important theories in developmental psychology today. Bronfenbrenner believed that children do not grow up in isolation; they live within layers upon layers of environmental systems, like the layers of an onion.
In the innermost layer is the microsystem—the environments in which the child directly participates and which have the most direct impact. Your home is part of the microsystem, as are your school, your playmates, and your extracurricular activities. Beyond the microsystem is the mesosystem—the connections between different microsystems, such as communication between your parents and your teachers, and the coordination between your family and school. Moving outward further is the exosystem—environments the child doesn't directly participate in but which indirectly influence them, such as parents' workplaces and community resources. The outermost layer is the macrosystem—including cultural values, social customs, laws, and policies, and other large-scale environments.
Among all these levels, the family, as the core of the microsystem, has the most profound and lasting impact on children's growth. The family is the first environment a child encounters in this world, the place where they form their initial understanding of the world, and the first classroom where they learn how to interact with others, how to express emotions, and how to solve problems.
Types of Family Structure: Different Families, Same Warmth
Since families are so important, do you think all families have the same structure? The answer is no. Families are like trees—although they share common roots, the forms of their branches and leaves can be quite different. In sociology, scholars use the concept of family structure to describe the composition and organizational patterns of family members. Now, let's get to know several of the most common types of family structures.
The nuclear family is the most familiar family form. It consists of a couple and their unmarried children. Simply put, it's father, mother, and children living together. The nuclear family is one of the most common family types in modern society, especially in highly urbanized areas. Many children's families are nuclear families—you live under the same roof with your father and mother, forming a small and warm family unit.
The multigenerational family (or stem family) refers to a family composed of two or three generations, including grandparents, parents, and children. In multigenerational families, grandparents and grandchildren have direct grandparent-grandchild relationships; they might live under the same roof or in nearby locations, maintaining close daily contact. Multigenerational families are more common in traditional cultures and have a long history in Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. In traditional Chinese culture, "four generations living under one roof" was once an ideal family pattern—great-grandparents
