A Peaceful Little Fishing Village by the Sea
The first rays of morning sunlight, like a gentle golden hand, softly lifted the mysterious veil over the Shenzhen fishing village.
The sky back then was more beautiful than any painting ever created. On the azure canvas above, a few clouds as fluffy as cotton candy floated slowly by, as if they too were admiring this peaceful little fishing village. The sun had just peeked half its face above the horizon, turning the entire sea golden, sparkling like someone had scattered countless little stars across the water.
The sea breeze, carrying its salty scent, gently blew through the thick bamboo grove in the village. The bamboo leaves rustled and whispered, singing an ancient song of carefree joy. The forest was home to many kinds of birds: clear-voiced thrushes, melodious orioles, and those pure white creatures with their long slender necks—the egrets. Sometimes they rested deep within the bamboo, sometimes they flew to the shore to hunt for food, their white forms glinting beautifully in the sunlight.
At the eastern end of the village lived a family with the surname Chen. Grandpa Chen was the eldest fisherman in the whole village. His face, darkened by years of sea wind, was covered with wrinkles as winding as ocean waves. But his eyes were as bright as the sea itself—clear and deep, seemingly holding countless stories about the great ocean. His wife, Grandma Chen, was a kind old soul who was always smiling. Her hair was as white as sea foam, pure and bright.
Grandpa and Grandma Chen had a son named Ah Hai. Ah Hai was ten years old this year, a sturdy boy with a round face tanned dark like a potato, but whenever he smiled, two rows of white teeth would show, making him utterly adorable. Ah Hai was the liveliest little boy in the village, with eyes as blue as the sea and hair perpetually tousled by the ocean breeze.
Ah Hai also had a younger sister named Little Yu. This name was given by their grandfather. She was discovered by Grandpa Chen on his way back from a fishing trip. One day, Grandpa found a tiny sea turtle egg washed up on the beach—who knows how it got there. He carefully brought it home and kept it warm in a rice jar. After two full months, the little turtle finally hatched. Grandpa was overjoyed and said this was a gift from the sea. To celebrate, he named his newborn granddaughter "Little Yu" (Yu means fish in Chinese). As she grew up, Little Yu, true to her name, became especially fond of playing by the sea, having countless stories to share with the ocean.
This particular morning began like every other peaceful day in the village. The rooster crowed at the break of dawn, its call echoing through the narrow lanes of the village. Dogs barked lazily in response, and the sound of wooden shutters creaking open filled the air. Smoke began to rise from the thatched cottages as families started their day.
Little Yu woke up first today. She lay on her wooden bed, rubbing her sleepy eyes, and turned to look at the small window. Through the gaps in the bamboo shutters, golden sunlight was sneaking in like a mischievous cat, dancing on the quilt. Little Yu couldn't help but smile—this was the most beautiful light in the world.
"小渔,小渔,快起来!" she heard her brother Ah Hai calling from outside. His voice was full of excitement, as if he had discovered some great treasure.
Little Yu quickly put on her little straw sandals and ran out of the door. The cool sea breeze brushed against her face, making her black hair flutter. The whole village was already bustling with activity. Uncle Wang from next door was carrying his fishing nets onto his boat, while Old Zhang was mending his fishing baskets under the big banyan tree at the village entrance. Aunt Li was hanging newly washed clothes on the bamboo pole in front of her house, and the clothes swayed gently in the sea breeze, like colorful flags.
Little Yu ran to the beach, where her brother was already waiting. Ah Hai was holding two small buckets, his face beaming with pride.
Ah Hai puffed out his chest proudly, "Of course! I'm going to be the best fisherman in the whole village, no, the whole world!"
Ah Hai scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed. He hesitated for a moment, then said, "Okay, but you have to wait until you're older. The sea can be scary sometimes, you know. When it's angry, the waves are as big as houses!"
Before Little Yu could respond, they heard Grandpa Chen's voice from the beach, deep and resonant like the tide rolling in. "Ah Hai! Little Yu! Come have breakfast with grandpa!"
Ah Hai and Little Yu looked at each other and immediately forgot about their conversation. They ran toward Grandpa Chen like two little puppies, their feet kicking up clouds of sand on the beach.
Grandpa Chen sat cross-legged on the mat, his white hair ruffled by the sea breeze. His face was full of wrinkles, like the surface of a dried lake, but his eyes were as kind as the morning sun. Little Yu loved listening to Grandpa tell stories about the sea, legends passed down through generations of fishermen.
