Welcome to the Star Kingdom
At the star's first whisper, we begin our cosmic journey through the night sky that has fascinated humanity since the dawn of time. Like the ancient people who first looked up and wondered, we too will discover the magical language the stars have been speaking all along.
The ancient night sky was crystal clear, without any modern light pollution. When the first humans looked up, the scene they witnessed must have filled them with both awe and curiosity. Countless points of light scattered across the dark blue canvas of heaven, some stars seemed to drift slowly across the sky while others twinkled in different colors. The moon waxed and waned, the sun rose and set each day. These celestial changes sparked human curiosity, and thus the earliest form of astrology was born.
We now know that those "wandering stars" in the night sky weren't really stars at all. They were planets—worlds like our own Earth, orbiting around the Sun. Before telescopes were invented, ancient people found it difficult to distinguish planets from stars, but they keenly observed that these special points of light seemed to follow their own patterns of movement. And so, humans began recording the movements of these celestial bodies, and the seeds of astrology were quietly planted.
In the journey ahead, you will get to know every member of our solar system family. The Sun is our stellar mother, providing light and warmth; the Moon is our nighttime companion; and the eight planets are like eight children of the Sun, each with its own unique personality and characteristics. Let's start by getting acquainted with each member of this family!
The members of our solar system are just like classmates in a classroom—each one has its own seat, its own personality, and its own special talents. Some classmates are particularly large, some run particularly fast, some wear particularly beautiful coats. Let's take a look at what the "class seating chart" of our solar system looks like!
First, let's meet the center of this cosmic classroom—the Sun. The Sun is the central figure of this family, and all the planets orbit around it. The Sun's mass accounts for more than 99.8% of the entire solar system! This number sounds huge, so let's use a comparison to understand it better: if the solar system were a class of one hundred people, the Sun alone would account for ninety-nine point eight "people" in weight, while all the planets, asteroids, and comets combined would only equal about zero point two of a person. That's how amazing the Sun is!
The Sun is not just a massive sphere—it is also an incredibly bright lamp and heater. The Sun's surface temperature is about 5500 degrees Celsius, while its core temperature reaches a staggering 15 million degrees! In this extremely hot environment, the Sun's interior is constantly undergoing a special kind of "burning"—nuclear fusion reactions. Hydrogen nuclei fuse together under high temperature and pressure to form helium nuclei, releasing enormous amounts of energy in the process. This energy travels through space as light and heat, and only a tiny fraction of it reaches Earth, yet it's enough to warm our planet and light up our days.
The Sun is incredibly important for life on Earth! Without the Sun's light and warmth, Earth would become a dark, frozen world where no plants could grow and no animals or humans could survive. The Sun is like the main character in our story of life—without it, this book wouldn't exist at all.
Before we begin our planetary journey, let's remember the Sun's important characteristics: it is the only star in our solar system, it has an enormous mass, and it provides all the energy that life on Earth needs. Every time you see the bright Sun in the sky, remember to say hello to it and thank it for bringing us light and warmth every day!
Our second important companion is the Moon. For children, the Moon might be the most familiar celestial object. On certain nights each month, when we look up, we can see a bright moon hanging in the sky. Sometimes the Moon is round, like a silver plate; sometimes it's curved, like a sharp sickle; and sometimes it shows only half its face, like a shy child.
Why does the Moon appear to change shape? This question puzzled many people for a very long time. Actually, the Moon itself doesn't change its shape—what changes is the part that is lit up by the Sun. The various shapes of the Moon we see have a special name: "phases of the Moon." The Moon's phases change in a regular pattern, repeating every 29.5 days.
When we can't see the Moon at all, we call it the "New Moon." At this stage, the Moon is exactly between the Earth and the Sun, and the side facing Earth isn't illuminated by sunlight, so it appears dark. A few days after the New Moon, we start to see a corner of the Moon light up, like a thin silver line hanging in the sky—this is the "Crescent Moon." A few more days pass, and half the Moon is lit, called the "First Quarter Moon."
As the Moon continues its orbit around Earth, the lit portion grows larger and larger, becoming a large semicircle called a "Gibbous Moon." When the entire Moon is lit up, we see the roundest Moon of all—the "Full Moon." During a Full Moon, the Moon looks like a silver lantern, lighting up the night. After the Full Moon, the Moon begins to "slim down," going from round to gibbous, then to a half-circle called the "Last Quarter Moon," and finally to a thin Crescent Moon before disappearing, starting a new cycle.
There's another fascinating thing about the Moon: it always shows the same face toward Earth, while the other side is forever hidden from us. This is because the Moon takes about the same amount of time to orbit Earth as it does to rotate once on its axis—both approximately 27.3 days. This phenomenon is called "tidal locking." You can imagine it this way: if you walk around a chair in the center of a room while always looking at the chair, you'd have to spin around to always face it. That's exactly what the Moon does—it "walks" around while "looking" at Earth.
