别再以为云就是天上的云 / What Even Is "The Cloud"? Forget Those Fluffy Things in the Sky
If you're a teen who's ever scrolled short videos until 2 a.m., saved game progress after your phone died mid-boss fight, or rewatched an online class you missed, you've already used the cloud a hundred times without even noticing. That seamless experience of picking up exactly where you left off, no matter what device you're on? That's all thanks to the "invisible helper" we're talking about today: the cloud.
You're Using the Cloud Every Day, You Just Don't Know It
If you think you've never used the cloud, let's play a quick game: open the 3 apps you use most on your phone, and I bet at least one of them is a cloud service. Bilibili, Douyin, Kuaishou, Baidu Netdisk, iCloud photos, QQ Music, Genshin Impact, Minecraft, Tencent Meeting, DingTalk classes, even the meme stickers you send on WeChat – they all rely on the cloud.
According to the 2024 *Cloud Computing Development White Paper* released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China's cloud computing market has exceeded 320 billion yuan, with personal users (especially teens aged 16-25) accounting for 22% of all cloud service users. That's 1 in every 5 cloud users being a young person just like you. On average, you spend more than 4 hours a day using cloud services – longer than the time you spend in class.
[Digital Sidebar: Quick Experiment] Go to your phone settings right now, find "iCloud" or "Xiaomi Cloud Service" or "Huawei Cloud Space", and take a look. You'll see all your photos, contacts, and app data syncing automatically. This is the most basic application of cloud storage: your data is stored on servers far away, so even if your phone is lost or broken, you can access all your data by logging into your account on any other device.
Why Can the Cloud Save Your Game Progress?
Take game progress as the most typical example: you spend three hours fighting a boss in Genshin Impact, your phone dies, and when you restart it, your save file is still there – the half-dead boss is even still waiting for you in the same spot. This isn't just game companies being nice; your game progress has been synced to the cloud in real time.
What would happen without the cloud? You get to level 10, your phone breaks, you get a new phone, and you have to start the game from level 1. You'd be furious, right? The cloud's job is to store your save files, settings, and purchase records on servers far away. No matter what device you switch to, as long as you log into the same account, you can pick up right where you left off.
The same goes for short videos: you stop watching halfway through, and when you open the app next time, you can continue from the exact same timestamp. The notes you took during online classes sync to the cloud automatically, so you can keep editing them on any computer when you log in. All these functions you take for granted are powered by the cloud.
What Exactly Is the Cloud? It's a Super Public Computer
This might sound obvious, but the cloud is not the fluffy white stuff floating in the sky. It's a collection of supercomputers stored in huge, library-sized buildings on the ground.
Your phone or laptop might have a multi-core CPU and a few GB of RAM, enough to run 10 apps at once without lag. But a cloud service provider's data center holds hundreds of thousands or even millions of servers, with combined computing power greater than all the computers in your entire school. Cloud providers package the computing power, storage, and network capabilities of these servers as public services: you take what you need, use it, return it, and pay only for what you use – no need to buy hardware, maintain it, or fix it yourself. It's just like electricity: you don't need to build your own power plant, just plug in and pay for what you use.
IaaS、PaaS、SaaS / The Cloud's Three "Skins": IaaS, PaaS, SaaS
Many students get dizzy the first time they hear the acronyms IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS – Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, Software as a Service. Don't panic, we'll use the example of opening a milk tea shop to explain them, and you'll get it in one minute.
Let's say you want to open a milk tea shop. There are three ways to do it: 1. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): You rent an empty storefront, renovate it yourself, buy ice machines, tea makers, raw materials, cups, and even set up your own POS system. You have to do everything yourself. In cloud terms, this is like renting a cloud server, installing your own operating system, database, and runtime environment – it's like renting an empty apartment, you can do whatever you want with it, with maximum freedom but also all the responsibility. 2. PaaS (Platform as a Service): You rent a fully renovated milk tea shop, with ice machines, tea makers, and POS systems already set up, even half of the raw materials prepared for you. You just need to bring your secret milk tea recipe and start selling. In cloud terms, the cloud provider has already set up servers, operating systems, runtime environments, and databases for you. You just need to upload your own code or content to use it, no need to worry about hardware or maintenance. It's perfect for students who want to work on their own projects but don't want to deal with technical details. 3. SaaS (Software as a Service): You directly franchise a well-known milk tea brand. The brand renovates the shop for you, provides the machines, recipes, raw materials, and even trains you how to sell milk tea. You just need to open the door and welcome customers. In cloud terms, this is all the apps you use now: Bilibili, WeChat, Genshin Impact, Tencent Meeting. You open them and use them directly, no need to do anything, just pay a membership fee (or watch ads for free). It's the most hassle-free model.
A --> D[Iaa
