The importance and urgency of sexual education for children have been increasingly confirmed by research and practice. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO, more than 120 million girls aged 15 to 19 worldwide experience forced sexual intercourse or other forced sexual acts each year; approximately 20 million married girls under the age of 18 are living in marriages where they often face sexual violence and reproductive health risks; and young people represent a significant proportion of new HIV infections globally. These alarming statistics reflect the profound consequences of inadequate sexual education. The lack of scientific sexual education not only leads to direct harms such as sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and sexual violence, but also affects individual personality development, social adaptation, and overall well-being.
Nevertheless, promoting sexual education has never been smooth sailing. For a long time, sexual education has been a focal point of social controversy, with people from different cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, and value systems holding vastly different attitudes toward it. Some believe that sexual education encourages early sexual behavior and undermines traditional moral values; others worry that the scope and intensity of sexual education may be difficult to control and could have adverse effects on children; still others equate sexual education with sexual liberation, viewing it as a洪水猛兽(scourge to be avoided at all costs). These misunderstandings and biases not only hinder the popularization and development of sexual education, but also deprive countless children and adolescents of the opportunity to acquire scientific knowledge about sexuality. The primary task of this book is precisely to clarify these misunderstandings and help readers establish a scientific understanding of sexual education.
To understand sexual education in depth, we must first clarify several core concepts. In everyday language, the Chinese character "性" carries excessively rich and even contradictory meanings: it can refer to gender, such as male or female; it can refer to sexual behavior, such as heterosexual or homosexual; it can refer to sexual attraction toward someone; and it can also refer to the broader dimension of human sexuality, involving personal identity, emotional attachment, intimate relationships, reproductive health, and many other aspects. This semantic ambiguity often leads the public to misunderstand sexual education, narrowing it down to "biological knowledge education" or "sexual behavior education," while ignoring its broader and deeper implications.
In academic research, scholars typically use two distinct English terms to differentiate between different dimensions of "sex": Sex and Sexuality. Although these two words are often translated into the same Chinese character "性," their connotations and denotations differ significantly. Sex generally refers to the biological aspects of being male, female, or intersex, encompassing chromosomal, gonadal, hormonal, and anatomical characteristics. Sexuality, on the other hand, is a much broader concept. The World Health Organization defines it as: "a central aspect of being human throughout life, encompassing sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. It is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships. While sexuality can include all of these dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed. Sexuality is influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors." In essence, Sexuality encompasses the totality of one's experience as a sexual being, including sexual identity, sexual orientation, sexual expression, sexual roles, intimate relationships, and many other aspects.
This distinction carries significant theoretical and practical implications. If we understand sexual education merely as education about Sex, it would be limited to imparting biological knowledge about reproductive organs, physiological mechanisms, and contraceptive techniques. However, when we expand our vision to include the dimension of Sexuality, the connotation of sexual education becomes substantially richer: it encompasses self-cognition and identity education, helping individuals understand "who am I" and "what kind of person am I"; it includes emotional education, helping individuals develop healthy interpersonal relationships and the capacity for intimacy; it includes values education, helping individuals form independent thinking and moral judgment on sexuality-related issues; it also includes gender education, helping individuals understand the social construction of gender roles and break gender stereotypes. It is precisely based on a comprehensive understanding of the full connotation of Sexuality that contemporary sexual education is regarded as holistic sexuality education, aimed at promoting the overall development and lifelong well-being of individuals.
Based on the broad definition of Sexuality, sexual education can be systematically defined as educational activities in which educators systematically and organizationally transmit knowledge, attitudes, skills, and values related to human sexuality to learners, with the goal of helping learners acquire scientific sexual knowledge, develop positive sexual attitudes, cultivate responsible sexual behavioral capacities, and ultimately achieve se
