The Secret of the Mysterious Gift
It was July 14th, and the summer cicadas sang an endless symphony from the old pagoda tree outside the window. Little Star sat at his desk, eyes fixed on the calendar where his mother had circled today's date in red ink—tomorrow would be his twelfth birthday. He had already decided what he wanted: a pair of limited-edition basketball shoes, or the latest gaming console, or perhaps... he hadn't quite figured it out yet, but something special was quietly expected.
Just as he was lost in thought, his mother gently pushed open the door, carrying a neatly wrapped box. The packaging was a deep, rich blue with some peculiar patterns printed on it—those looked like the intricate traces on a circuit board. Little Star took the box and found it lighter than expected, with no sound when he shook it. This didn't sound like basketball shoes or feel like a gaming console package should feel.
"Happy birthday, Little Star!" Mom kissed his forehead with a smile. "Your dad specially asked someone to bring this back from abroad. He said this was the thing he wanted most when he was a child."
Little Star's curiosity was completely ignited. He carefully tore open the wrapping paper, as cautiously as an archaeologist excavating precious artifacts. When the last layer was removed, he saw a small blue rectangular object, about the size of the eraser he used daily, but covered with golden metal contacts and a black chip on the surface. There was also a notebook in the box that looked somewhat aged, with a hand-stitched leather cover, on which someone had written in fountain pen: "To the Explorer of the Future—May you find the key to the door of wisdom."
"What... what is this?" Little Star looked up, somewhat confused. "This isn't the gift I wanted."
His mother smiled. "Your dad said you'd like it. He said you'd understand when you open that notebook."
Little Star opened the notebook with mixed feelings. On the first page of the yellowed paper, the familiar fountain pen handwriting continued:

*If you are reading these words, it means you have received a gift from destiny—a blue development board. On the journey ahead, it will become your most faithful companion, leading you to explore a wonderful world hidden within everyday objects.*
*This world is called "Embedded Systems." It's not as intangible as the internet, yet it's even more ubiquitous than the internet. From the smartwatch on your wrist to the microwave in your kitchen, from drones flying through the sky to electric cars running on the roads—within all these seemingly ordinary devices, there are intelligent "hearts" hidden. And these "hearts" are exactly what we are going to explore.*
*Are you ready? Let's begin!*

After reading this passage, the confusion in Little Star's heart was gradually replaced by curiosity. He picked up the blue development board again, studying it carefully. Could this tiny object really be so magical? Could it really control those complex devices? With these questions, he turned to the next page of the notebook, beginning his true journey of exploration.
What Are Embedded Systems?
To understand what embedded systems are, let's do an interesting thought experiment. Imagine you're walking through a bustling city, encountering all kinds of electronic devices along the way. When you wake up in the morning, you look at the alarm clock on your bedside—that's an embedded system; when you're brushing your teeth, you use an electric toothbrush—that's another embedded system; when you go out, you swipe your card to enter the subway—the gate has an embedded system inside too; during class, your calculator does math problems—it is also an embedded system.
If you count carefully, you'll find that the number of these embedded systems far exceeds what you previously imagined. According to statistics from the International Data Corporation (IDC), there are approximately 25 to 35 billion embedded devices running globally. This number is growing at a rate of 15% to 20% annually. In other words, at this very moment while you're reading this book, the number of embedded devices in use worldwide has already exceeded three to four times the total world population.
So, what exactly are embedded systems? The definition from Wikipedia is: "An embedded system is a computer system that is part of a larger product and has a dedicated function." This definition sounds somewhat abstract, so let's understand it in simpler terms: An embedded system is a computer system specially designed to accomplish a specific task.
There's a key phrase here: "dedicated function." Regular computers, like your laptop or home desktop, are designed as general-purpose devices that can handle various different tasks. You can use them to watch movies, write articles, play games, listen to music—by installing different software, the same computer can transform into different tools. But embedded systems are different; from the moment of their birth, they are set to do one thing for their entire existence.
For example, there's an embedded system inside your microwave oven that will spend its entire existence doing just one thing—heating food according to your settings. It won't try to play videos or connect to Wi-Fi; it will only focus on its main job: controlling microwave emission, managing cooking time, and adjusting heat levels. Because of this, embedded systems can usually complete their tasks with very high efficiency and reliability.
A Map of Embedded Systems in Daily Life
To help Little Star better understand the omnipresence of embedded systems, let's draw a "Map of Embedded Systems." This map will take us through every corner of modern life, discovering those hidden intelligent devices.
Smartwatch: A Computer on Your Wrist
Let's start with the device closest to you—your smartwatch. When you raise your wrist to che
