Chapter 1: What Is Everything Made Of? — Guesses from Ancient Greece to Alchemy
Now, imagine a pile of sand, a glass of water, a flame, and a stone. They look completely different, feel distinct, and cannot be transformed into one another easily. But is it possible that they are all built from the same basic “bricks”? Thousands of years ago, humans began pondering this very question. In an era without microscopes or chemical analyzers, people relied solely on observation, touch, and boundless imagination to unveil the secrets of what everything is made of. This journey is filled with philosophical speculation, mysterious experiments, and flashes of genius. Although many of their conclusions are incorrect by today's standards, they represent the first dawn of scientific thinking.

Ancient Greek Wisdom: The Four Elements
Around 600 BCE, the philosopher Thales of Miletus proposed a bold conjecture: water is the fundamental substance (archē) of all things. Why? Because he observed that all living things require water to grow; seeds sprout in moist environments; rivers nourish the land. Moreover, water can exist in three states—solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (vapor)—suggesting its transformative potential. While we now know water is not the sole fundamental substance, Thales' contribution was monumental: he attempted to explain the complex world using a single, observable natural material, rather than relying on myths or divine creation. This marked the crucial shift from "mythical thinking" to "natural philosophy."
Thales' student, Anaximander, went further. He argued that the fundamental substance was not any specific material (like water or fire), but an unbounded, characterless “Apeiron” (the Infinite). Just as the most basic Lego brick isn't “red” or “blue” but a “basic block that can become any color,” Anaximander envisioned this “Apeiron” could separate into opposites (like cold and hot, dry and wet), which then combine to form all things. His idea was more abstract but sidestepped the problem of how one specific element could transform into another.
The concept of "elements" was systematized by Empedocles (c. 495–435 BCE). Observing that nature exhibited four fundamental qualities—cold/hot and dry/wet—he reasoned that all materials could be explained by combining these. Thus, he proposed the famous Four-Element Theory: 1. Earth: cold and dry → solid, stable, heavy (e.g., stone, soil). 2. Water: cold and wet → liquid, fluid, flexible (e.g., rivers, oceans). 3. Fire: hot and dry → gaseous/plasma, rising, scorching (e.g., flame, sunlight). 4. Air: hot and wet → gaseous, light, enveloping (e.g., air, wind).
Empedocles believed these four elements were eternal and unchanging. The diversity of all things arose from their different proportions of mixture, driven by two forces: Love (attraction, causing elements to combine) and Strife (repulsion, causing elements to separate). This is like a Lego model: with only a few basic bricks, endless structures can be built through different combinations. The Four-Element Theory successfully explained physical state changes (ice melting to water, water evaporating to vapor) but failed to account for chemical transformations (wood burning to ash, seemingly creating new substances). Nevertheless, its influence was profound, lasting until the 17th century when modern chemistry superseded it.
Aristotle inherited and refined the Four-Element Theory. He assigned each element a natural place: Earth naturally moves toward the center of the universe (hence stones fall), while Air and Fire naturally rise (flames ascend, bubbles rise). He also added a fifth element—Aether—which composed the heavenly bodies, being perfect, eternal, and moving in circles. Aristotle's physics dominated Western thought for nearly two millennia until Galileo and Newton dismantled it with experiments and mathematics. Interestingly, the order of elements (fire, air, water, earth) roughly corresponds to increasing density: Aether (lightest) → fire → air → water → earth (heaviest).
Interactive Thinking: Understanding Four Elements with Lego Grab your Lego bricks. Suppose you have only four basic types: cubes (earth), plates (water), cones (fire), and rods (air). What can you build? A house (mostly earth, with water-plate windows)? A boat (mostly water, earth deck)? A lamp (mostly fire, air chimney)? This is the essence of the Four-Element Theory: limited “basic bricks” + infinite combinations = infinite material world. But remember: if wood burns to ash, where did your “fire brick” go? The Four-Element Theory couldn't answer—this is what later chemists would solve.

The Dawn of Atomism: Democritus' "Indivisible"
Coexisting with the Four-Element Theory was a radically different idea: Atomism. Its core claim sounds remarkably modern: all things are composed of countless, indivisible particles moving, combining, and separating in the void. This view was proposed by the Greek philosopher Democritus (c. 460–370 BCE), with his teacher Leucippus playing a key role.
How did Democritus arrive at this? He conducted famous thought experiments: 1. Division Experiment: If you have a piece of gold and keep cutting it, will you eventually reach a particle that cannot be cut further? Democritus argued there must be a smallest unit that, if cut, would cease to be gold. He called this unit “atomos” (Greek for “indivisible”). 2. Sensory Differences: Why is honey sweet and bile bitter? If matter were infinitely divisible, any substance should be infinitely diluted, and its taste should vanish. But it doesn’t. Therefore, different substances must have inherent differences, arising from the shapes of their atoms: honey’s ato
