Chapter 1: What Is Kindergarten?
---
The morning sunlight, like golden honey, crept through the curtains and gently landed on Little Flower's pink cheeks. Outside the window, birds were singing cheerful songs on the branches, as if announcing the arrival of a brand new day. Little Flower rubbed her bright, sparkling eyes, let out a tiny yawn, stretched her little body, and was just about to hop out of her small bed covered with sheets printed with little bunny patterns.
"Little Flower, wake up!" Mom's voice floated in from the kitchen, accompanied by tempting aromas—smells of toasted bread and fried eggs, mixed with the fragrance of fresh milk.
Little Flower jumped out of bed right away, her bare feet pattering as she ran to the kitchen and dove into her mother's arms. "Mommy, Mommy, what are we having today?" She looked up with her little face, eyes full of anticipation.
Mom laughed and lifted Little Flower into her highchair, placing a plate of delicious breakfast before her: a golden fried egg, round slices of bread, and a cup of warm milk. Daddy came over from the living room, holding a colorful little card in his hand, with a mysterious smile on his face.
"Honey, do you know what this card is?" Daddy waved the colorful card in front of Little Flower.
Little Flower tilted her head, curiously staring at the card. The cover was pink, with a beautiful house drawn on it, colorful balloons on the roof, and a group of children happily playing on the grass. She shook her head and said, "I don't know. What is it?"
Daddy and Mommy exchanged glances and smiled. Then Daddy sat down beside Little Flower and gently opened the card, pointing to the words on it. "Little Flower, this is a kindergarten enrollment notice. It means you're going to start kindergarten very soon!"
"Going to kindergarten?" Little Flower blinked her eyes, her mouth forming a little "o" shape. She had never been to kindergarten before. To her, the three words "kindergarten" were like a mysterious magic spell, making her both excited and a bit puzzled. "Daddy, what is kindergarten? What's there? Is it a super big playground?"
Daddy patted Little Flower's little head, his eyes full of tenderness. He said, "Kindergarten isn't a playground, you know. But it really does have lots and lots of fun things! There are very kind teachers there. They're like mommies who will take care of you and teach you new skills. There are also many children about your age. You can play together, sing together, and do games together. In kindergarten, there are building blocks to stack, play-dough to mold, pictures to draw, books to read, and even big slides and swings!"
Little Flower's eyes grew brighter and brighter as she listened, like two sparkling little stars. She couldn't help but ask again, "But why do children need to go to kindergarten? I can play with Mommy and Daddy at home too!" Her little lips pouted, seeming a bit reluctant to leave her warm home.
Mom came over and sat on Little Flower's other side, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Honey, do you know how little seedlings grow into big trees?"
Little Flower thought about it and said, "Little seedlings need water, sunshine, and the gardener uncle to take care of them!"
"That's wonderful!" Mom smiled proudly. "Actually, little children are like little seedlings. At home, Mommy and Daddy love you and take care of you, giving you warmth and a sense of security. But children also need to go to kindergarten because there is more 'sunshine' and 'water' there—new friends, new knowledge, and new skills. In kindergarten, you'll learn to share toys with other children, learn to take turns and wait patiently, learn to dress yourself, button your buttons, and tie your shoes. You'll also learn lots of fun things like singing, dancing, drawing, and telling stories."
Little Flower nodded thoughtfully. She was starting to understand a little bit. However, there were still many little question marks swirling in her heart. She blinked her eyes and asked, "Mommy, what are the teachers at kindergarten like? Are they scary like that big, chubby security uncle at the gate?"
Daddy couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Ha ha, that security uncle isn't scary at all. He's just big and strong. The kindergarten teachers are very gentle! They've all had professional training. They know how to get along with children, how to make children happy, and how to help children solve little conflicts with their friends. When you go to kindergarten, you'll find that the teachers love to hug you and kiss your forehead, praising you as the most wonderful little treasure!"
Hearing Daddy's words, Little Flower felt warmth spreading in her heart. She asked curiously again, "What kinds of toys are there in kindergarten? I love fluffy teddy bears the most. Can I bring one with me?"
Mom smiled gently. "Of course you can! You can bring your favorite teddy bear to keep you company. But you know, there are many, many toys in kindergarten too. There are big LEGO blocks, and you can use them to build castles, airplanes, and long trains. There are colorful play-doughs, and you can mold them into all kinds of shapes—little bunnies, little cars, and big suns. There are also paintbrushes and paints, and you can paint blue skies, white clouds, rainbows, and your beautiful home."
Little Flower listened in a trance, her eyes sparkling with excitement. She seemed to already see herself sitting among building blocks, constructing a glittering castle. She seemed to see herself holding a paintbrush, drawing a rainbow-colored picture on paper.
"What else is there in kindergarten?" Little Flower grew more and more excited, her little feet swinging under the chair.
Daddy thought for a moment and said, "There's so much more! There's a big reading corner with all kinds of picture books. During nap time, there are soft little beds and warm blankets where you can take a cozy nap. Outside, there's a big playground with slides, swings, seesaws, and a little sandbox where you
